Chapter 10 – Fallout and Planning

Isa could not bear to see us off. It had taken a full day to reorganize the pack, and Alicia needed time to recover from her ordeal. I think she was right on the edge of becoming hypothermic when we had arrived.

While preparations were made for the group of reserves, one of the six Shifters who had shown some backbone approached me. “I am Jussa. Some of us overheard your discussion with Isa. We talked among ourselves and came to a decision. Our people cannot survive another round of challenges for leadership…”

I interrupted him, “I have to do this,” I said with a quiet intensity.

He smiled before I could object further. “We know. Isa is a lorekeeper, which means she sometimes underestimates the hunters and warriors. However, you also have contact with the outside world. As does, I imagine, Alicia. The six of us hunters can keep the pack together for a time if we agree not to challenge each other. But the community will need a leader. Between you and your lover, you have to know someone back home you could trust to pick such a person for us. At least, if your son is not appropriate.”

I had trouble at the suggestion of Zak being willing to lead a pack. He was definitely a lone wolf. There was nothing I could think of that he would want less than to lead. Despite this, or perhaps because of his nature, Zak was good at figuring out a person’s motivations. It was not something supernatural, he was just good at reading people. I had met the occasional person on the otherside who had the same talent.

I beat myself up a little at this request. I had obviously underestimated the capacity of these people to be able to find creative solutions to their problems. It also made me realize how desperate the pack was for a leader. There were often wandering shifters of power who were searching for a pack or clan to take over.

However, that was not the ‘traditional’ solution. There was usually a period of fracturing within a community when an outsider took over by violence. There had been for the Central Sydney pack when Andre took over. But there was no alpha or shifter of that potential in their community, which was why they had accepted me so readily.

“I can write a letter if that will help. Although how you will get it delivered safely is beyond me. There is an Alpha in Sydney I would trust, with input from my son, to pick someone appropriate. But I have no way to guarantee it will be delivered.”

Jussa waved my concern away. “We have our own ways to make sure it will reach its destination. If you provide me with the letter, there are allies we have in the broken lands that will deliver it.”

“The broken lands?” I asked curiously.

Jussa tried to hold back a sneer, failed, but answered the question. “Those lands that signed treaties restricting what we can do.
